The iPhone 12 vs the iPhone 13

Let’s talk about the iPhone 12 vs the iPhone 13, two of Apple’s most recent developments, and see where they stand in the world of top-tier smartphones.

Whenever Apple drop the latest and greatest in the world of new-release smartphones the internet is immediately abuzz, with tech review platforms everywhere pitting the older iPhones against the newer model to measure improvements and changes in software and interface.

The arrival of the iPhone 13 was no different. After hitting the stores in September 2021, fans of the electronics company were quick to upgrade and shelf their older devices for the time being. However, buying a phone is a massive investment and not one to be taken likely, especially if you’re considering the savvy (and not exactly cheap) iPhone 13.

So, before you bin off your iPhone 12 model, let’s take a look at how the two compare in this review of the iPhone 12 vs the iPhone 13.

iPhone 12 vs 13: visuals

At a glance, the iPhone 13 doesn’t appear to be massively different to the iPhone 12 in terms of immediate appearance.

Both models boast a similar screen size and shape, with the main difference being a change in thickness (the iPhone 13 is slightly denser at 7.65mm instead of 7.4mm) and a change in colour (the iPhone 13 comes in a varied range of red, pink, blue, midnight and starlight).

When it comes to the screen display, however, real differences between the iPhone 12 and 13 become more evident. Primarily, the iPhone 13 has a brightness of up to 28% higher than the iPhone 12, making it easier to view your screen’s content in any environment.

The notch used for Face ID is also slightly smaller in the iPhone 13, allowing you more screen display to work with.

iPhone 12 vs 13: camera

Apple is arguably known for creating devices with exceptional camera quality, and you may be wondering just how much sharper your iPhone photography can really get.

Of course, the iPhone 13 surprises us all with yet another upgraded mobile camera. Whilst both devices include dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, the iPhone 13 lets in 47% more light, allowing for clear and crisp images in pretty much any setting.

Additionally, the 13’s ultra-wide sensor is perfect for taking landscape shots, and both the 12 and 13 include image stabilisation technology to keep your images free from shaky visuals.

iPhone 12 vs 13: speed & storage

There are few things more frustrating than a slow or lagging mobile device.

Luckily, the iPhone 13 takes care of this by replacing Apple’s A14 Bionic processor, as found in the iPhone 12, with a speedier 15 Bionic processor. The iPhone 12 was already pretty quick, meaning that the 13 is fast to a fault.

This will also improve the durability of your device in the long-term, as apps are slowly becoming more and more reliant on processor power. A processor that falls below the mark can make gaming or watching films on your iPhone a more difficult task.

Additionally, the iPhone 13 has also made huge improvements in storage. The maximum amount of storage in this newer device is 512GB and, if you choose to upgrade to the iPhone 13 Pro, you can select a whopping 1TB of storage. The iPhone 12’s 256GB limit pales in comparison.

iPhone 12 vs 13: Battery

Although Apple reigns supreme in terms of camera quality, iPhones have an unfortunate history of poor battery life.

We have seen this improve in recent years. Disappointingly for buyers, the iPhone 12 took a regrettable step back with only a 2815mAh battery. Luckily, however, the iPhone 13 has come back fighting with 3240mAh – and you can most certainly tell.

The battery life has improved by approximately 2.5 hours following each charging cycle with the iPhone 13 over the 12. Additionally, the charging speed is much faster, meaning that, even if your phone does die unexpectedly, you won’t have to suffer downtime for too long.

the final take

Despite appearing relatively similar on the surface, the iPhone 13 makes up for what is lacking in the iPhone 12. If long battery life and great camera quality are important to you, then an upgrade could be the right decision.

If you are currently using an older model, such as the 8 or the XR, then an improvement in display, camera and speed will be especially evident in the iPhone 13.
